FAQs
At what age should my child first see a dentist?
We recommend bringing your child in for their first visit by the age of two, or earlier if you notice anything concerning. These early visits help build comfort and catch any issues early on.
How often should kids have dental check-ups?
Most children benefit from a check-up every 12 months, though some may need more frequent visits. We’ll let you know what’s best based on your child’s needs.
Do you offer fluoride treatments for children?
Yes, fluoride is a safe, effective way to help strengthen teeth and prevent decay, especially for kids at higher risk of cavities.
What happens at a child’s first dental visit?
It’s usually a relaxed, short appointment to help your child get familiar with the clinic and the team. We’ll check their teeth, chat with you about care at home, and answer any questions.
My child is anxious about going to the dentist, can you help?
Absolutely. We take a gentle, patient-first approach and work at a pace your child is comfortable with. Building trust is just as important as the treatment itself.
Is dental care free for teens in New Zealand?
Yes — from Year 9 until their 18th birthday, teens are eligible for free basic dental care under the government-funded adolescent dental scheme. This includes check-ups, cleans, fillings, and more.
Can I stay with my child during their appointment?
Yes — parents are welcome to stay with their child during visits. A familiar face can help make the experience more comfortable and relaxed.
Do you see preschoolers and primary-aged children?
Absolutely! We’re happy to see preschoolers and primary-aged children here at Tooth Works, and we’ll make sure their visit is as relaxed and positive as possible. These appointments are at a private charge, but you also have the option for your child to be seen free of charge through the School Dental Service until Year 9.
